Saturday Night Genealogy Fun- A Memorable Valentine's Day

It's Saturday Night -

time for more Genealogy Fun!

Valentine's Day was yesterday, 14 February...

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:

1) Recall a memory of a Valentine's Day in your life. Is it the first love of your life? A special day with your lover, spouse or significant other? Do you have a picture of a Valentine's Day event, or a special Valentine that you received, to share?

2) Describe your Valentine's Day memory, activity and/or image in a blog post of your own, a comment to this blog post, or in a comment/post on Facebook.

3) Have fun remembering a special day.

There is no memorable Valentine's Day that I can recall. But, during elementary school, we would sign our names on VD cards and pass out candy to each student in the class and including the teacher. We had to use a shoebox to collect all our candy and make an opening for candy to be placed easily. Sometimes we would do Valentine's Day activity, such as BINGO or word searches. At middle school, no one didn't do that anymore.

I miss the good old days.

Are There Changes to Come?- Find A Grave

Image result for findagrave

I will be sharing my point of view on this subject.

Have you read Judy Russell's post yet? I advise you to read her post, so this will sense.

I agree with Ms. Russell 100%.

I haven't lost anyone close to me, so I don't how it feels, but I am sure I would just as upset as others in the community.

From what I have seen, some Find A Grave contributors want to be the fastest to create a memorial. It's sad to say, but this happens all the time to recently deceased celebrities.

For instance, after the tragic news of Kobe Bryant, less than an hour after his death being reported, someone already created a memorial for him and his daughter.

What's so important to strive to be the first one to a memorial? It's like the recently deceased are not important besides the competition.

In a way, I kind of feel as though the purpose of Find A Grave is lost.  Many wonderful volunteers use the site the way it is intended, but others would rather just use it for competition.

Since Ancestry bought the gravesite in 2013, we would expect to hear from one or both of the companies. But no, not yet. None of the companies have taken any action yet. So who knows what the future holds for Find A Grave. We will just have to wait and see.

Xpanding My Education -2020

Photo on Wallpapers.com

Have you started creating your education plans for 2020? If
so, will you be attending live conferences or workshops?

Yes, it's already February, and there is still so much more to do during 2020.

I am not able to attend any conferences this year, but I will be virtual attending webinars and conferences.

MY PLANS

  • This year, I will be watching as many webinars as I can. Such as Legacy Family Tree, VGA, state genealogical societies, Youtube channels, FS Learning Center, etc.

  • I will have to make time to read my NEW books, I got for Christmas. I am currently reading The Family Tree Guide to DNA Testing and Genetic Genealogy-2nd Edition.

I am thinking about creating a genealogy club in my area. I want to be more active in the community and get my name out there.

Another thing I'm considering is using Second Life for genealogy.  I read Elizabeth O'Neal's post about her homeschool plan and, she mentioned a few interesting societies, that I will need to look into further.

What are your plans for 2020? Leave a comment down below.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun- A Day In The Life

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  What were the newspaper headlines the day one of your grandparents or great-grandparents were born?

2)  Use any newspaper provider (Chronicling America (https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov) is FREE) to find the headlines.

3)  Tell us who your subject was, when and where they were born, and tell us three or four headlines on the front page of the newspaper for that date.

4)  Share your finds on your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or on your Facebook page.  Please provide a link to your work as a comment to this post.

My great-grandmother, Clara L Scott was born on 30 June 1904 in Vestal, New York. There were multiple articles on the same day, so I choose the first one I saw.

A SUNDAY TRAGEDY LIFE BELTS BY EXPRESS

Body Steamboat Men Rush Preparations for Government Inspection

*NO ONE LEFT TO OPEN SAFE

Family in Whose Keeping Were Books Needed by Union All Killing in Slocum Fire

* "DAN" EMMETT DEAD

The Author of "Dixie" Passes Away

These are some of the articles in the newspaper.
